Black Friday

I feel so old today,

Older than Christendom

And as weary.

Today is the day when I wake up tired

And tear the lace curtains

As I wrench the window shut

Against the traffic noise,

When I shove toes through sock ends,

Rip off shirt buttons,

Crash the gears

And remember quarrels.

I look at terrifyingly young girls

With pointed breasts

And smiling faces and

I hate the lace curtains surrounding my life:

The shackles of manners,

Of ties, or morality,

Of marriage to the woman I love so much in saner moments:

And to my son

(A tighter bond than any marriage vow here).

I hate the commuter train

That carries me to that other marriage,

My career,

My boss, with whom I

Can quarrel with ease today

And resent every day -

But more today.

I feel so old today.

And I wait and wonder

When will come the relief

When suddenly I’ll be freed of my burden

Of realisation that I’m 36

And there are things

I shall never do or be again.

God, send me self-deception.
